Tile Grouting

Tile Grouting

Tile grouting is the process of filling the spaces between tiles with a paste-like material called grout. This material, typically made from a mixture of cement, water, and sometimes sand or additives, seals the gaps, helps keep the tiles in place, and prevents water or debris from getting underneath them. Grouting also gives tiled surfaces a finished, polished look, and can enhance their durability by protecting tile edges from chipping or cracking. Tile grout comes in different colors to match your existing tile color or aesthetics.

Process

1. Wait for the Adhesive to Cure
After we lay the tiles, we’ll need to let the tile adhesive (thin-set or mortar) dry, usually 24 hours. Grouting too early can ruin the bond.

2. Clean the Joints and Tile Surface
Wipe away any leftover adhesives or debris from the joints and the tile face. Grout sticks best to clean spaces.

3. Mix the Grout
Powdered grout is mixed with water (or a special additive) until it has a smooth, peanut butter-like consistency. Premixed grout is ready right out of the bucket.

4. Apply the Grout
Scoop some grout onto a rubber float. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle and press the grout diagonally across the joints, working it in so there are no air pockets. Cover all the joints this way.

5. Remove the Excess Grout
Hold the float almost upright (90 degrees) and scrape it across the tiles to remove as much extra grout from the surface as possible, being careful not to pull grout back out of the joints.

6. Wipe the Tiles

Wait about 15-30 minutes for the grout to set slightly, then use a damp sponge to gently wipe grout haze from the tile surfaces. Rinse the sponge often, not pressing too hard, or you’ll pull grout out of the joints. Let it dry a bit more, then buff away any remaining haze with a dry cloth.

7. Grout Curing and Final Clean
Let the grout cure typically 24-72 hours. After it’s fully cured, polish off any final haze with a dry rag.

8. Seal the Grout (if needed)
Some grout, especially cement based types, should be sealed to prevent staining and moisture penetration.
