Outlet

Outlet

When we fix outlets, we follow a methodical, safety focused process.

1. Test for Power
Using a voltage tester or multimeter, we double check the outlet to make sure it’s really dead. Sometimes breakers are mislabeled, so it’s good to be sure.

2. Remove Outlet Cover
We unscrew and remove the faceplate. This just takes a screwdriver.

3. Unscrew and Pull Out Outlet
Next, we unscrew the outlet from the electrical box and gently pull it out, exposing the wiring behind it.

4. Inspect Wiring
At this point, we look for any obvious issues: Loose wires, signs of burning, discoloration, or damage to the outlet itself.

5. Fix the Problem

  • If wires are loose: We tighten the screws or re-strip and reattach as needed.
  • If the outlet is damaged: We replace it with a new one (connecting wires to the new outlet in the same fashion).
  • If wiring is damaged: We cut back to good wire, strip insulation, and reconnect.
  • If the issue isn't apparent: Sometimes, the problem is further back — like in another outlet on the same circuit. Diagnostics get a little more involved then.

6. Reassemble and Test
Once repaired or replaced, we push the outlet back in, screw it to the electrical box, and replace the faceplate.

7. Check for Other Issues
If problems persist, it might be a wiring issue elsewhere in the circuit, and we start again along the rest of the outlets or switches on that circuit.
